“Look Up,” Project Sapiens’ latest single, showcases a commendable presence of detail in the aesthetic build-up and advancement. It also combines the classic metal sound with a little alternative atmosphere and an overall sense of purpose. It is both forceful and musically impressive at the same time.

Project Sapiens is a Copenhagen, Denmark-based progressive/alternative metal band. Pawel Jackowski (music & lyrics) and Mads Rahbaek (vocals) founded the pair in 2017 and published their first well-received EP, “Here we are,” in January 2018, followed by the prog-metal musical “Improbus Act I” in 2020. Their sound has been equated to that of Devin Townsend Project, System of a Down, Tool, and Mastodon.

“Look Up” was composed prior to the outbreak of the Ukrainian war. It was an attempt to find an outlet for the artist’s anxieties and anxiety about the impending conflict and the paradigm shift in the western/eastern hemispheres. The vocals were recorded after the conflict started, and the lyrics and music reflected all of his emotional states as a result of that catastrophe. The song portrays the story of an anxious person who sees the world falling apart and wishes to flee to protect those he cares about.

“Look Up” follows the typical set-up of identifiable riffs and live percussion through warm bass and distortion throughout the lifecycle, presenting an act with equal parts delicacy and weight in their creative expression. As a result, the structure continues to bestow the power of juxtaposition – the composition, in particular, hits with an instantly uplifting groove; another juxtaposition is made with the lyrics’ suffering and poetic anguish.

“Look Up” feels like an explosive rock anthem from a simpler time, but it also drives with a diverse sense of purpose and style that is unique to Project Sapiens, with soaring guitars’ fast-paced, high-octane drum work, and unity on all levels.

“Look Up” constantly evolves during its four sixteen run time, highlighting a diversity of influences and ultimately descending into a recklessly dedicated metal sound, with particular pieces in the vocal build-up.

Project Sapiens grasp the art form and create a heavy yet hypnotic realm – into which rock and metal fans can actually escape, connecting with the tuneful embrace as much as the authentic way in which the music yells out on their behalf.
