Kicking things off in a brilliantly stylish fashion, the hip hop familiarity, fused with the raw musical vibrancy of an upbeat hip hop-meets-rap style aura – Real RG’s pop off Mix is an absolute must for those of us who like to escape entirely into the energy of music.

Things continue down this pathway throughout the set, offering a dash of something we all know and love, some legendary mentions, but presenting it in a somewhat hypnotically ambient and rhythmic manner. It’s like a guilty pleasure done properly. It feels great to lose yourself in the playlist, and what’s more, everything progresses in a totally satisfying way. The collection feels connected within itself, relevant to its own artistry and vibe – as opposed to being merely a list of personal favorites arranged in a random order.

The song is sublime, and really the feeling increases as the whole thing progresses. It’s an effortless recording in many ways, but the strength of it is that there is so much space within which to absorb the imagery and the concept of the track. The lyrics are kept to a minimum, there are only so many lines, but each one has been chosen and placed within the walls of the track with great care. It’s awesome to listen to, and the simple descending loop behind all of it has a hypnotic warmth – the sort that is easy to get into, but also refreshingly honest and organic in nature. The instrumentation has a realness about it that effectively reflects the openness and character of the two leading voices and the ideas that they present to listeners.

The great thing is that while the song does maintain the basic elements of hip-hop and rap, so as to pull in the right kind of audience in the beginning, it also offers up something more intense; faster, creatively independent, with a huge collection of lyrics and an unquestionable amount of character embedded in the performance. The music is so beautiful that at first it’s not really the lyrics that are picked up on from the rap performance, the vocal flow is so fast that many of these fly by in a little bit of a haze, but the beauty of the music means that this isn’t a negative at all – you’re highly likely to listen again.

The character or personality that is so consistently evident in the vocal performance is hugely appealing. There’s an originality to the sound, the tone, the inflections and the general expression and presentation of words, and this has great value. When you do listen intently there’s a fair amount of clever wordplay and a very confident and varied display of lyricism. Plus, the vocal melody, the hook, really gets inside your mind, and it’s a pleasure to get caught up on.
