Mystic Garden by Will Konitzer
Will Konitzer’s return this month brings a track that feels contemporary enough to fit in among the bulk of rhythmically short-lined house releases of late. Musically though, Will Konitzer builds a fairly unusual soundscape behind the performances – a somewhat dreamlike ambiance accompanies a distant beat and creates a calmness; within which everything just floats through. Will Konitzer writes music with deep, tech and progressive house overtones. His productions explore relationships between syncopated percussive elements coupled with seemingly-loose melodies inspired by his love of the underground sound of DJs such as Jimpster, Nick Curly, Sasha, & Chris Stussy.
As is often the way, the track falls close to the two-minute mark, but in this case it feels like a much longer experience. Though the intro hits a little harder, the track and the performances settle into something gentler after a while. The melodic moment is welcomed, this whispered singing style moves smoothly throughout the instrumentation – feeling like simply another layer within the mix.
First off there’s the rhythm, then the crisp yet heavy finish of the beat. Then there’s the synths – the fuzz, the shivers induced by the ambiance. All of this hits hard within the first minute, and really it’s the absolute skill of the production that lets the soundscape rain down around you in such a satisfying way.
There’s an intense pace to the track that grabs you from the offset, but there’s also a clever use of space, of pause, within the journey. And among everything, the melody adds progressive house aura – an anthemic value that will likely bring through an even wider audience for those who crave a lyric to follow along.
Rarely does modern electronic music offer so much in the way of recognizable traits and character. “Mystic Garden” presents numerous musical hooks that grip the listener and likely the dancer too. Furthermore, the soundscape builds up brilliantly – the rising vibrancy, the increasing speed; all of this captivates and lights up the room as it plays out.
